The two faces of life

One afternoon while I was watching TV, I heard voices calling from the outside of our home, and when I went out and see who they were, there were two kids, a boy and a girl about 11 and 9 years old, they were asking me to let them remove the grass on the sidewalk in front of my house for a fee of 10 pesos ( about 25 cents).
I said no, thinking these could be some of the pesky kids from outside the subdivision pretending to collect trash but sometimes stole some of the plant pots or anything they can sell in the junk shops, and besides there's not much grass to clean. But the kids were persistent even begging, saying they need the money to buy food for dinner and then I saw the little girl holding a small plastic bag of rice. I said okay, then watched them as they removed the grass. While watching them I can't help but think of myself and my kids, how lucky we are that we have never experienced this kind of situation.
Even if we were not rich, our parents did everything to give us the best future and same thing we are doing for our children and grandchildren. I pity these kids that in their young age, instead of playing and enjoying their childhood, they were forced to work to have food in the table. These are the two faces of being a child. I did not asked about their parents, for I think I already know the answer.
Now that I have given them work, I'm expecting that from time to time they will drop by again to ask for the same work, and I will be waiting, sure hubby will be happy he doesn't have to do the job. LOL..
